Through its missions and research activities, the University is a major player in society’s reflection on the challenges of sustainable development and related environmental issues.

Local research: recognized expertise

COP HERL

Born in the aftermath of the Lubrizol and Normandie Logistique fire on September 26, 2019, the COP HERL project has mobilized Rouen’s scientific community to analyze the consequences of this disaster on Man and the environment. Launched in November 2020, COP HERL brought together 17 laboratories and more than 100 scientific and technical staff around four lines of research: characterization of substances from the fire, assessment of environmental contamination, study of health impacts, and analysis of social perceptions and population resilience.

This interdisciplinary project, financially supported by the Région Normandie, the Métropole Rouen Normandie, the Agence Nationale de la Recherche and the Université de Rouen Normandie, provided answers to issues that could not be explored during crisis management.

In addition to results relating to the characterization and monitoring of environmental markers, and the public’s perception of risks, this work has led to recommendations from the scientific community to decision-makers.

Norman IPCC

Created in 2020, the Normandy IPCC, a group of experts and scientists tasked with assessing the impact of climate change on the Normandy scale, is chaired by two academics, Stéphane Costa, Professor of Geography and Environment at the University of Caen Normandy, and Benoit Laignel, Professor of Geosciences and Environment at the University of Rouen Normandy. Sixteen academics from Normandy are also members, including seven from Rouen. In particular, the group’s work should enable the international IPCC forecasts to be translated for the Normandy region, and synthesize existing scientific work in Normandy on this subject.

In 2010, Benoit Laignel joined the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as an expert assessor. He also chaired the local IPCC set up by the Rouen Normandy Metropolis, comprising 16 experts grouped around 11 themes.

A scientific reputation in France and abroad

University Institute of France

Each year, the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) organizes a selection campaign to distinguish and appoint as members French professors-researchers, based on the quality of their scientific activity and their research project. The scientific quality, coherence and innovative nature of the research project are the main criteria for evaluation, and candidates must situate their projects within the international context of their discipline.

CNRS medals

Every year, the CNRS medals are awarded to researchers and employees who have made an outstanding contribution to the institution’s dynamism and renown.

Tatania Besset, a researcher in the COBRA laboratory, was awarded the Bronze Medal in 2018, rewarding a researcher’s first work, which establishes him or her as a talented specialist in his or her field. Previously in 2017, she was awarded an H2020 ERC Starting Grant for her FarCatCH project entitled “Innovative Strategies for Unprecedented Remote C-H bond Functionalization by Catalysis”. This five-year, €1.5 million grant rewards promising young researchers who are international leaders in their field.

Angela Vella, a lecturer at the Groupe de Physique des Matériaux (GPM) laboratory, was also awarded the bronze medal of the CNRS Institute of Physics in 2015.

Grand prix Raymond Castaing 2021

François Vurpillot, head of the scientific instrumentation department at the Materials Physics Group (GPM), was awarded the Grand Prix Raymond Castaing 2021 by the Société Française des Microscopies on July 6, 2021. The prize recognizes more than twenty years’ research work on tomographic atom probes, with a particular focus on understanding the underlying physical phenomena.

Laboratory excellence at the service of innovation

Industrial Chairs

The Industrial Chairs program has a triple objective:

– Build and structure collaborative scientific research projects in priority and strategic areas for the public and private players involved in the industrial chair, through a strong and lasting partnership.

– Enable internationally-renowned French and foreign researchers and lecturers, whether mobile or not, to work on an ambitious, innovative research program of indisputable industrial significance.

– To provide training through research, offering doctoral and post-doctoral students a long-term approach to research carried out in academic research laboratories, combined with the experience of players in the business world.

On April 4, 2023, the University of Rouen Normandie, INSA Rouen Normandie and CNRS launched a collaboration with the pharmaceutical company ORIL industrie (Servier Group) as part of the Colibri industrial chair. This four-year partnership, co-funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and ORIL industrie to the tune of 1.7 million euros, aims to develop more eco-efficient production processes for tomorrow’s drugs.

Service platforms

The aim of the Université de Rouen Normandie’s technology platforms is to provide the scientific community and socio-economic players with cutting-edge infrastructures for carrying out research contracts, collaborations and services.

The Université de Rouen Normandie has identified several technology platforms within its research laboratories, pooling cutting-edge equipment and expertise to help you realize your innovative projects. Several of these platforms are shared with other research institutes (CNRS, Inserm, INSA, CHU).

To date, we have made the following available to you:

  • 7 platforms: C2IORGA, ASGARD, CYFLOW, PS2E, GPM Microscopies, RENADIAG, PRESEN
  • 1 Research Services and Support Unit, HeRacLeS

These platforms are open to all public and/or private partners. This access may take the form of a research collaboration or a service provision.
For further information, please do not hesitate to contact the “Pôle valorisation” of the “Direction de la Recherche et de la Valorisation” or directly the platforms, on their respective sites.
